How to Configure Rank Math IndexNow and Submit Updated WordPress URLs

Rank Math IndexNow gives WordPress administrators a practical way to notify participating search engines when URLs are added, updated or deleted. The workflow is available through Rank Math’s Instant Indexing module, so you can configure automatic notifications for selected post types or submit URLs manually when a specific change requires attention.

Configuration is only one part of the process. You also need to understand which content should be submitted, where Rank Math hosts and verifies the API key, how to send several URLs in bulk, and how to interpret the response shown in submission history. A successful notification confirms receipt by the search engine; it does not guarantee crawling, indexing, rankings or traffic. The steps below focus on Rank Math IndexNow setup and practical diagnosis without changing intentional SEO settings such as NoIndex, canonical, robots.txt or redirects automatically.

What Rank Math IndexNow Does—and What It Does Not Guarantee

Rank Math’s Instant Indexing module provides an IndexNow workflow inside WordPress. It can notify participating search engines about a URL that has been added, modified or deleted. This is useful when your publishing process includes meaningful content changes and you want to send a notification without preparing each request outside WordPress.

IndexNow should be treated as a notification mechanism, not as an indexing command. A successful response means that the search engine received the submitted URL or URL set. The search engine still decides whether and when to crawl the URL, include it in its index or use it in search results. The submission also does not guarantee rankings, visibility or traffic growth.

It is important to keep this workflow separate from other SEO decisions. IndexNow does not replace a considered sitemap, canonical, NoIndex, robots.txt or redirect configuration. If a URL is intentionally excluded from indexing, submitting it does not automatically make that exclusion incorrect.

Before You Start: Access and URL Selection

Begin in the WordPress Dashboard and identify the Rank Math SEO area. The relevant feature is called Instant Indexing. If the module or its settings are not available, check whether Rank Math is using Advanced Mode; Rank Math documents Advanced Mode as the access point for some modules and settings.

Before enabling automatic submission, decide which post types should participate. Rank Math allows administrators to choose the post types submitted when content is published or modified. This selection should reflect the purpose of the site and the role of each content type rather than an assumption that every URL needs notification.

Rank Math states that URLs marked NoIndex are not automatically submitted. Do not remove NoIndex, canonical, robots.txt or redirect directives merely to force a submission. First confirm that the URL is genuinely intended for the relevant search-engine workflow and that its existing SEO signals are deliberate.

How to Enable Instant Indexing in Rank Math

To enable the feature, open Rank Math SEO → Dashboard in WordPress. Locate the Instant Indexing module and enable it. The module provides the Rank Math Instant Indexing workflow used for IndexNow notifications.

After enabling the module, open Rank Math SEO → Instant Indexing → Settings. This is the area for the automatic-submission controls. Select the post types that should be submitted automatically when their content is published or modified. Choose only the types that fit your site’s publishing process and SEO purpose.

Rank Math automatically generates an IndexNow API key as part of the standard Instant Indexing workflow and dynamically hosts it for search-engine verification. You do not need to describe this as a separate manual key-generation process. Instead, confirm that the generated key and its location are available through the settings before relying on automatic submission.

Once the relevant post types are selected, save the configuration. From that point, configured URLs can be submitted when posts are published or modified, subject to the URL’s SEO settings. In particular, URLs marked NoIndex are excluded from automatic submission. Enabling the module does not promise that a participating search engine will crawl or index every submitted page.

How to Verify the IndexNow API Key

Open Rank Math SEO → Instant Indexing → Settings to inspect the API-key controls. Rank Math provides a Check Key option that opens the location where the generated key is hosted. Use it to verify that the key is displayed at the expected location and that the site and host are correct.

The key must be accessible to search engines. The IndexNow protocol requires a key file hosted on the same host as the submitted URLs. If the location cannot be reached or the expected value is not displayed, check whether robots.txt, server rules or a security tool is blocking access. Also confirm that the key shown by Rank Math matches the value available at the hosted location.

Do not expose private credentials or unrelated secrets while trying to correct a key problem. Before changing or manually exposing a key file, confirm the site and host carefully. A generated key is not the same as a verified key if search engines cannot access the expected location.

How to Submit Multiple URLs

Rank Math offers a manual batch workflow for URLs that need to be submitted together. Go to Rank Math SEO → Instant Indexing → Submit URLs. Enter the URLs in the submission field, placing one URL on each line, and then select Submit URLs.

This method is useful when the URLs are not conveniently selected from the WordPress Posts screen or when you already have a prepared list of changed pages. Review the list before submitting it. Each URL should be intended for notification, correctly formatted and associated with the expected site host.

For existing WordPress posts, use the bulk action available from the Posts screen. Select the relevant posts, choose Instant Indexing: Submit Pages from Bulk Actions, and apply the action. This provides a second way to submit multiple URLs without entering every address manually.

At the protocol level, IndexNow supports up to 10,000 URLs in one POST request. Treat that as the protocol limit, not as a guaranteed limit for every Rank Math interface, WordPress configuration or practical workflow. If the interface or request process behaves differently, follow the available controls and use smaller groups as necessary.

Use bulk submission for meaningful additions, updates or deletions. Do not repeatedly submit every URL without a reason. Repeated requests do not turn notification into a guarantee of crawling or indexing, and excessive request volume can produce a response indicating too many requests.

How to Read Submission History and Error Codes

After submitting URLs, open the History section in Rank Math’s Instant Indexing area. It displays submitted URLs and response codes. Start diagnosis there instead of resubmitting the same list without checking what happened.

Response Meaning and first check
200 The search engine received the submitted URL or URL set. This does not confirm crawling or indexing.
202 The request was accepted while API-key validation is pending. It is not proof that the URL was indexed.
400 The URL is improperly formatted. Check the submitted address and its formatting.
403 The API key is missing or unavailable. Check the generated key and whether its location is publicly reachable.
422 The submitted URL belongs to another site. Check the URL host and the site associated with the key.
429 Too many requests were made. Use a slower or more controlled submission process.

A 200 response is the clearest confirmation that the submission reached the search engine, but it is deliberately limited in meaning. It does not confirm that the page has been crawled, indexed or ranked. A 202 response likewise means that acceptance is pending key validation, not that indexing has occurred.

For a 400 response, inspect the URL exactly as entered and correct its format before submitting again. For 403, use the Check Key control and verify that the key is present and accessible. Check robots.txt, server rules and security tools if the hosted key location is blocked.

A 422 response requires a host check. Confirm that the submitted URL belongs to the expected site and that the key is hosted for that same host. A 429 response indicates too many requests, so reduce the request volume or separate the URLs into more controlled batches rather than repeatedly sending the same request.

Other SEO signals still matter after a successful notification. A URL can remain outside the index because of intentional NoIndex settings, robots restrictions, redirects, canonical signals or other search-engine decisions. Do not remove these directives automatically. Review them in the context of the page’s purpose and the site’s SEO configuration.

Practical Checklist After Submission

Use this short process after a manual or automatic submission:

  • Confirm that the URL is intended for notification and belongs to the expected host.
  • Check that the URL is correctly formatted and that the generated API key is accessible.
  • Review Rank Math’s History section and record the response code.
  • Treat 200 as receipt of the notification, not as proof of crawling or indexing.
  • Treat 202 as pending key validation and investigate 400, 403, 422 or 429 according to the cause.
  • Do not remove intentional NoIndex, canonical, robots.txt or redirect settings solely because a URL was not indexed.

Rank Math IndexNow is most useful when it is configured as a controlled publishing workflow: enable Instant Indexing, select suitable post types, verify the generated API key, and submit changed URLs through either the manual list or the Posts-screen bulk action. Use History to interpret the result and correct the underlying issue before trying again.

The central expectation should remain clear: IndexNow notifies participating search engines, while crawling, indexing, rankings and visibility remain separate decisions. Explore our WordPress plugins, WooCommerce extensions, themes and membership plans to find the right tools for your website.
